Where is Samoan Spoken?

Samoan is a Polynesian language spoken in Samoa and American Samoa. It is the first language of about 85% of the people in Samoa. Samoan has a simple grammar, with only 9 verb tenses and 2 noun classes.

The Samoan language, or Gagana Samoa, is widely spoken in the Pacific Islands region. With approximately 260,000 native speakers on the islands and a significant diasporic community, the total number of Samoan speakers worldwide was estimated at 510,000 in 2015. It has also gained prominence in New Zealand, where it is the third-most spoken language with 101,900 speakers as of 2018.

The Samoan Community in Australia

samoan translation

The Samoan community in Australia is a close-knit group that is known for its strong sense of family and culture. Many Samoans in Australia have come from Samoa. In addition to their cultural ties, Samoans also connect through shared experiences of racism and discrimination. Despite these challenges, the Samoan community in Australia has flourished, with members establishing businesses, working in various professions, and raising families.

The 1970s saw a significant increase in the Samoa-born community in Victoria, thanks in part to educational programs sponsored by the Australian Government.

In the early 1800s, a small number of Samoans made their way Down Under in search of perceived opportunities for trade and education. But it wasn’t until decades later that a large wave of Samoan migration happened.

The Samoan community in Australia is known for their strong links to religion due to the influence of Christian missionaries that migrated to Australia in the 1850s.
