The Khmer Language

Khmer is an Austroasiatic language spoken by the Khmer people and is Cambodia’s official and national language. It has been influenced by Sanskrit and Pali through Hinduism and Buddhism. Central Khmer is the most widely spoken dialect, but there are regional accents and separate dialects in Phnom Penh and Stung Treng provinces. Northern Khmer and Khmer Krom are dialects spoken by ethnic Khmers in Northeast Thailand and Vietnam, respectively.

Khmer is primarily an analytic language with no inflections or conjugations and uses particles and auxiliary words for grammatical relationships. It has a subject-verb-object word order, stressed syllables, and is not tonal. The Khmer script, an abugida descended from the Brahmi script, has been used since at least the 7th century and has evolved.

The Khmer Community in Australia

The Khmer community in Australia is a small but growing community of Cambodian Australians who have migrated to Australia, mostly as refugees, since the 1970s. They have faced challenges adapting to a new environment due to language barriers, cultural differences, and the trauma associated with their experiences as refugees, including the Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia.

Despite these challenges, they have established a strong presence in Australia through community organisations, cultural events, and contributions to society in fields such as business, education, and the arts.
