The Belarusian Language
Belarusian is an East Slavic language and one of the official state languages in Belarus, alongside Russian. It is also spoken in other countries with Belarusian minorities and shares many features with other East Slavic languages, such as Russian, Ukrainian and Rusyn. According to the 2019 census, 26% of Belarus’s population reported Belarusian as the language they usually speak at home, while 54.1% identified it as their native language.
A 2009 Belarusian government study found that 11.9% of the population actively used Belarusian, while 29.4% could read, write and speak the language, and 52.5% could read and speak it. These figures come from a historical 2009 study and provide context on Belarusian language use at the time. The language has also been classified as vulnerable by UNESCO, although UNESCO has noted more recent community initiatives supporting Belarusian.
The Belarusian Community in Australia
The Belarusian community in Australia is a small but active community primarily made up of immigrants and their descendants who settled in various parts of the country after World War II. They celebrate their rich cultural traditions through various events and festivals throughout the year and are vocal in their support for democracy and human rights in Belarus.
Their contributions help to promote understanding and appreciation of Belarusian history, culture, and values in Australia.
