Cultural Appropriateness of Dinka Professional Translation Services
To effectively communicate with CALD audiences, it’s important to adapt messages to fit the cultural context in which they will be received. This requires careful consideration of language, customs, and values.
By taking the time to understand the culture of our diverse communities, we need to ensure that the messages we translate are accurately conveyed and can lead to stronger connections and better results. Community checking helps us ensure that our translations are culturally sensitive and easy to understand.
By consulting with a member of the Dinka community, we can ensure that any cultural references are accurately represented and that the overall tone and format of our Dinka translations are appropriate. It is a crucial step in ensuring that our translations are not only technically accurate but also respectful and culturally sensitive.

The Dinka Language
Dinka is a Nilotic dialect cluster spoken by the Dinka people, the major ethnic group of South Sudan. There are several main varieties, Padang, Rek, Agaar, Bor, Hol, Twic East, and Twic, which are distinct enough (though mutually intelligible) to require separate literary standards. Jaang, Jieng, or Monyjieng is used as a general term to cover all Dinka languages. Recently Akutmɛ̈t Latueŋ Thuɔŋjäŋ (the Dinka Language Development Association) has proposed a unified written grammar of Dinka.
The language most closely related to Dinka is the Nuer language. The Luo languages are also closely related. The Dinka vocabulary shows considerable proximity to Nubian, which is probably due to medieval interactions between the Dinka people and the kingdom of Alodia.
The Dinka Community in Australia
The largest number of South Sudan-born people living in Australia was recorded in Victoria (1,118), followed by Queensland (715), then New South Wales (561), and Western Australia (489). A total of 4,825 people indicated that they were of partial or full South Sudanese ancestry.
This figure increased to 7,699 in the 2016 census, with 2,750 living in Victoria, 1,430 in Queensland, and 1,201 in Western Australia. 10,755 people indicated that they had partial or full South Sudanese ancestry. The most recent census data from 2021 shows 8,255 people born in South Sudan living in Australia. 14,273 people indicated that they had South Sudanese ancestry.
