The Mongolian Language

Mongolian is an agglutinative language with vowel harmony and a complex syllabic structure. It has a basic word order of subject-object-predicate, with noun phrase ordering relatively free due to grammatical cases. Verbs are marked for voice, aspect, tense, and modality/evidentiality. Modern Mongolian evolved from Middle Mongol and is related to the extinct Khitan language.

It is not related to Turkic, Tungusic, Korean, or Japonic languages, but instead forms a language Sprachbund with Turkic and Tungusic. Mongolian literature dates to the 13th century, with earlier Mongolic precursors in the literature of the Khitan and other Xianbei peoples.

The Mongolian Community in Australia

Australia and Mongolia established diplomatic relations in 1972, with a focus on education, mining, and developmental assistance. At the time of the Australian federation in 1901, Mongolia was part of the Manchu Qing Empire.

Australia only recognised Mongolia’s independence from the Republic of China (Taiwan) in 1967. Mongolia opened an embassy in Canberra in 2008, while Australia opened an embassy in Ulaanbaatar in December 2015, having previously opened an Australian Trade Commission in 2011.
